Noi Clinic Philosophy
You are not your weight. You deserve thorough, judgment free medical care whether or not weight loss is a goal or priority for you. If you are not receiving good quality care free of judgement, you have the right to look elsewhere.
There are ways to manage health without a weight focus. It is your decision to pursue this, and this choice deserves to be accepted by medical professionals involved in your care
It is also your decision to choose to pursue fat loss if that is your goal for any reason, be it for your physical health or psychological health.
Weight stigma is real and all pervasive in society. We need to ensure people in larger bodies enjoy their successful, fulfilling lives without judgement. Any choice on what you do with your body is yours to make.
How Does This Translate to a Model of Care at Noi Clinic?
We believe there is not a one-size-fits-all model for management of weight concerns.
We aim to provide a non judgmental, comfortable place for you to chat about all of your concerns regarding your health and weight
We use nutrition, education, psychology and evidence based medications (if desired) to help you improve your health whether or not you choose to pursue fat loss.
We take the view that excess adipose (fat) tissue plus metabolic, physical and psychological sequelae, make up the chronic medical condition, currently called ‘obesity’.
People living in a larger body who are otherwise medically/psychologically well are a different entity
We believe that fat loss is beneficial for individuals suffering from the medical condition, obesity as it leads to improvement in some weight related metabolic issues, medical conditions and psychological issues however we know that this is hard and needs to be done when and if you choose to do it.
We believe that difficulties achieving and sustaining weight loss are due to physiological changes we know occur to defend maintenance of body weight
If a weight loss modality, be it lifestyle changes, medications or surgery is not successful, this is not your fault. This is a sign of you being a ‘non-responder’ to the intervention. Just as if a blood pressure medication failed to lower someone’s blood pressure, weight management options can also fail to bring about fat loss. We then need to try a different modality.
We believe that treatments for weight (fat) loss need to be lifelong
We believe that there is currently no ‘cure’, but increasingly better treatments that can significantly improve health.
We believe that as per the Hippocratic Oath, we as medical professionals need to first do no harm. This includes not pursuing fat loss at the expense of an individuals physical and/or psychological health.
We believe in a patients GP being the centre of care, and we will (with your permission) communicate with any other health professionals involved in your care to ensure you have the best level of holistic support.
